Sarasota County Schools earned an A grade for 2025-26, its 23rd consecutive A, and Charlotte County earned its first A district rating in 15 years. Manatee County sits at a B with an 86 percent graduation rate and a record number of A-rated campuses. Here is what that actually means for the home you buy.

How do the three school districts compare in 2026?

Each of our three counties is its own school district, and they are not interchangeable. Sarasota County Schools holds the state's A grade again for 2025-26, its 23rd straight year, with a wide set of choice options including well-known magnet programs like Pine View, Bay Haven, Suncoast Polytech, and Oak Park. Manatee County's district grade is a B, its highest ever, built on a record number of A-rated campuses and an 86 percent graduation rate. Charlotte County Public Schools just posted its first A in 15 years after a strong run that included nine A-rated schools the year before.

Which schools are A-rated in Lakewood Ranch?

Lakewood Ranch is the place most relocating families ask about first, and the school list is the reason. The A-rated campuses in the Ranch include B.D. Gullett Elementary, Robert E. Willis Elementary (ranked in the top 5 percent of schools statewide), Gilbert W. McNeal Elementary, Lake Manatee K-8, and Lakewood Ranch Preparatory Academy. R. Dan Nolan Middle is A-rated too, and Lakewood Ranch High School ranks first in the Manatee district and in the top tier of Florida high schools on U.S. News rankings.

One catch most buyers do not expect: Lakewood Ranch spans two counties. The northern portion sits in Manatee County and the southern portion in Sarasota County, each with its own district and its own zoned schools. Before you assume a home feeds a particular school, confirm the exact address with the district.

Do you have to live in a school zone to attend?

Your home's address determines your zoned school, and in these three counties that is the most reliable route to the school you want. Each district also runs a controlled open enrollment, or school choice, window: Sarasota County's lottery has typically opened in February and March, Manatee County's in early January, and Charlotte County's in January. Seats are capacity-restricted and often lottery-based, so a choice application is a chance, not a guarantee. Magnet and specialty schools sit outside the standard lottery entirely.

How should school zones shape your home search?

If a specific school matters to you, the honest answer is to shop inside its zone. Choice and reassignment are limited, so buying in the right boundary is the dependable way to land in the school you want. That is true whether you are looking at Lakewood Ranch, the A-rated elementary zones in Venice and Sarasota, or the growing master-planned communities in North Port and Port Charlotte. Ask for the current zone map for any address before you make an offer, because boundaries shift and a home on the wrong side of a line feeds a different school.

What about private and parochial schools?
